About

Sophie Davis- Artist/Printmaker

Sophie uses printmaking to capture the beauty and fragility of the landscape. Printmaking techniques such as collagraph, monoprinting and drypoint etching are combined together to produce unique artworks which are built up layer by layer, creating texture and subtleties of colour.

Bookbinding techniques such as Japanese Stab Binding, hard case binding and coptic bindings are also explored and combined with original printmaking art to create stunning sketchbooks and notebooks.

Dramatic coastal landscapes of Cornwall and the Isle of Skye are primary sources of inspiration, but also the gentler hills around Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire near where Sophie is based provide an ever changing landscape. Rich colours, rolling hills, atmospheric mists and woodland areas all provide inspiration for new prints.

Sophie started her creative journey in 2003 by studying for a HND in 3D Design Crafts at York College, following which she specialised in metal sculptural works, enamelled wall pieces and jewellery. She exhibited throughout the UK in galleries and art and craft fairs.

In recent years Sophie has developed her printmaking skills through attending weekly printmaking workshops at Wiltshire College, which she has done for a number of years. Sophie is also a member of Bath Artist Printmakers, which is a cooperative printmaking studio in the Larkhall area of Bath. Bookbinding skills have been learnt through various courses at Bath Artists Studios and these skills are continually being developed.

The art of printmaking and the craft of bookbinding are both passions, hence the combining of both skills together to produce beautiful functional pieces in addition to her atmospheric art prints.

Sophie exhibits and sells her work through various outlets such as the Batheaston Art Trail, Made in Bradford on Avon gallery and Bath Artist Printmakers in Larkhall, Her work has also been exhibited in the Royal United Hospital Bath, Bath Library and various local art and craft events to support charities such as Bath Mind, Open Arms Malawi and the RUH Art at the Heart.
